What the Size Categories Mean

Microplastics are grouped by size because different sizes enter your body in different ways — and carry different risks:
< 10 μm — Smallest & Most Dangerous
From breathing in airborne plastics. Small enough to potentially cross the blood-brain barrier.
10–30 μm — Medium Particles
Mainly from eating & drinking (tap/bottled water, seafood, takeout). Can enter the bloodstream from the gut.
30–70 μm — Larger Particles
Too big to easily cross most barriers. Usually from medical sources or rare sampling variation.
The lower your total count, the better—the ideal benchmark is zero detectable microplastics.
Simple Steps to Reduce Exposure
Microplastics can carry or absorb chemicals like BPA and phthalates that contribute to:
- Drink filtered water instead of bottled
- Avoid heating food in plastic containers
- Choose natural fabrics like cotton or wool
- Keep air clean and reduce dust in your home
